Round One to Kerry
I think Kerry presented himself more clearly and more articulately (that's probably a given) than Bush. I think people will feel more comfortable with Kerry after tonight's debate.

That being said, I'm one of the people out there who would like to believe John Kerry means what he says when he says he's committed to staying in Iraq until the job is done etc. I could vote for Kerry if I felt he was as committed as Bush. I'm intrigued but not convinced by this first performance.

Kerry made strong points about not working fast enough to secure nuclear materials and safeguarding ports etc..but crapped out on Afghanistan and bin Laden (did he want to put the whole US Army in Afghanistan? There are more troops there now than there were during the war). Then again, Bush didn't nail him to the wall on it so nobody will notice.

In general, Bush didn't take several openings from Kerry. (e.g. Bush is going through the UN on Darfur and the whole process is bogged down and people are dying - the UN isn't the answer) The man just isn't quick on his feet with rebuttals- but he did have a good command of the facts.

All heartening aside - Kerry didn't specify how he's going to get others involved. Bush made a good point re: calling current allies 'the bribed and coerced' not helping. And then Kerry, when talking about the lead up to Iraq, said that he would have taken longer and asked 'what do you guys need' to get on board? Would Senator Kerry be making a reference to 'bribing' or 'coercing' potential allies to get them on board?

All in all I'm satisfied with the presentation of Kerry's performance (but there are still loops in his positions and approaches) and Bush did as well as was expected.

If, on the other hand, I were an anti-war Democrat I probably wouldn't have liked much of what I heard out of Kerry's mouth re: Iraq.

This is a bit of a paradox - by acquitting himself well and speaking of what needs to be done in Iraq he might have driven away some key supporters.

The question now becomes, will those anti-war Democrats stay in the anybody-but-Bush crowd or will they go to Nader or stay at home.

CBS Duped Again?
Kerry's been blathering on at every opportunity about how Bush has a secret plan to bring back the draft (perchance to stoke the fears of the 18-24 demographic?). Too bad none of it's true. Oh, there's legislation about a draft floating around about but it's backed by Democrats.

Anyway, CBS took the bait and might just be taking another bath.

Fucking Canada.com
You gotta love opening your Inbox and suddenly having a whole flood of emails show up from days, weeks, and months ago - emails that you never saw.

So - I'm sorry if any of you sent me emails over the past little while that I didn't get back to. Chances are, they were in the batch that arrived just now.

I will post the letter I send to canada.com later.

Not that canada.com is the only one dropping the ball. Not too long ago my publisher sent me an email to a rogers.com account that never came through - which is too bad because he was offering me a gig...that he thought I didn't want because I didn't respond.

MERDE! You have to love technology but, on the other hand, it can be a muthafucka.

With Friends Like These...
John Forbes Kerry is in for some disappointment on the European front if he gets elected.

Which makes you wonder why he's so quick to label countries already in Iraq as the 'coalition of the coerced and bribed'?

Stephen Hayes on Kerry's New Tack
A quick read on the links between Al-Qaeda and Iraq that Kerry is now ignoring.

To be clear: there is NO proof of an Iraqi hand in 9/11. None. But to deny there were links between the two from the end of Gulf War I to the start of Gulf War II is blissful ignorance.

Why can't Bush say something like this?

Zahra Kazemi
If you thought the case of Canadian-Iranian journalist Zahra Kazemi had no impact inside Iran...and to think Chretien has subsequently gone their on a business trip.

Yuck.
